09/22/2011 - Fostering a Fit Family

Eating healthy and working out are much easier to stick to when you have a partner, or better yet, a whole family doing it with you!
September 24th is National Family Health and Fitness Day, so we thought we would share some of our favorite tips for fostering a fit family all year-round.

Make healthy eating easy: If you have healthy snacks at home, it will be easier to make healthy choices. Let your kids come to the grocery store with you and pick out some healthy snacks.
When your kids feel involved, they will be more likely to try new, healthy foods.
Try a new recipe: Eating healthy doesn’t have to be boring. Let each family member pick out a new, healthy recipe to try each week.

Reward your family with fitness instead of food: Instead of going out for ice cream or fast food as a reward for good behavior or good grades, take your kids swimming or to the park. Everyone will feel better about himself or herself after some good playtime – which is the best reward!
You don’t have to be competitive: Staying active doesn’t mean your family has to divide into teams for a competitive game. Dance around your living room or go for a bike ride or hike.
Set a good example: Kids watch what their parents do, so if they see you making good decisions when it comes to eating and exercise they are more likely to follow in your footsteps.
Schedule it in: Most likely your family already has a pretty tight schedule. Try to find some time each week to do something fun and active as a family.
