How Much Protein Do You Need?

Remember elementary school when the teacher talked about how everyone is different (hair color, eye color, gender…), and without our differences the world would be a very boring place? Adult competitive athletes need 0.6 to 0.9 grams of protein per pound of body weight. That means an active 200-pound baseball player requires 120 to 180 grams of protein a day.

What about a growing teenage athlete, say the star quarterback on the high school football team? That 150-pound student could use 120 to 135 grams of protein every day, considering he’ll need 0.8 to 0.9 grams of protein for each of his 150 pounds.

What about women? How much protein to we need, ladies? Well, if you work out on a daily basis, but aren’t training to compete in a pro sport, you’ll need 0.5 to 0.75 grams of protein for each pound. So, if you weight 125 pounds, that’s 62.5 to 93.75 grams of protein each day.
