05/25/2011 - Packing a Healthy Lunch

Packing your own lunch does more than save you money; it can also help save your waistline! When you put together your own meal, you get to control portion sizes and all of the ingredients. And if you’re like most busy, working people you probably feel the need to eat at your desk — another unhealthy habit. According to the American Dietetic Association, 75 percent of office workers eat in rather than spend their lunch hour outside the office moving around. If this sounds like you, it’s even more important to make sure you’re eating a healthy midday meal.

Here are some tips to help you pack a healthy, yet flavorful, lunch:
Dress up your sandwich: You don’t have to settle for plain “turkey on wheat” in order to have a healthy sandwich. Start with low-fat cold-cuts such as turkey or chicken, then load on the veggies to add flavor! Tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, avocados and onions will take your sandwich’s flavor and nutritional content up a notch. Pile it all on whole wheat bread, tortillas or pitas.
Pack some fruit: Apples, oranges and bananas are all easy and healthy fruits to transport. But don’t forget about the most exotic fruits like kiwi, raspberries and pineapple.
Swap your soup: Cream-based soups tend to have higher calorie and fat content. Opt instead for broth-based soups such as vegetable, minestrone or chicken noodle.
Take a close look at your microwave meal: Microwavable meals are quick and easy, but make sure you’re picking meals that contain no more than 300 calories and 800 grams of sodium.
Don’t forget the snacks: Snacking on small meals throughout the day helps maintain blood sugar levels and keeps you from binging when mealtime comes around. Aim for a 100-calorie mid-morning and mid-afternoon snack. A Whey Protein smoothie made with Bipro Whey Protein Isolate, string cheese, trail mix, peanut butter and crackers and yogurt are all smart snack options.
